Hot sauce lovers, strap in for some bad news: According to Huy Fong Foods, Inc., the maker of the iconic Sriracha hot chili sauce, the company is halting production of its beloved sauces until the end of Labor Day. Following in the footsteps of other product shortages, including infant formula and tampons, Sriracha is just the latest product with inventory too low to meet demand, and is expected to be hard to find on shelves this summer. .

Why is there a shortage of Sriracha?

In a letter to customers, Huy Fong explains that “due to weather conditions affecting the quality of chillies”, the California company faces a severe shortage of chillies and is unable to produce its products: Sriracha sauce Hot Chili, Chili Garlic or Sambal Oelek.

Huy Fong sources red jalapeño peppers primarily from Mexico, New Mexico and California, regions that are experiencing a “mega-drought that is investigating the link to human-caused climate change.” The extreme weather conditions have led to the drying up of soils and consequent crop failures in the regions.

Huy Fong states in the letter that any order submitted after April 19, 2022, would be rescheduled after Labor Day in the order they were received, and new orders will be put on hold until after September 6, 2022.
