The first ‘Joker 2’ teaser confirms Lady Gaga’s role
Joker was an unlikely blockbuster; a Batman movie with no Batman in it, an R-rated superhero movie with no superheroes (unless you count the deranged man dressed as a clown), and a dark character study of the most notorious Batman with very little action or comic book antics. Despite all of this, the film made over $1 billion and won several Oscars, including one for its star Joaquin Phoenix.
It’s a tough act to follow, although the movie did leave some room for a sequel – which is definitely happening. Title Joker: Madness for two, the film will reunite Phoenix with the co-writer and director of the first film, Todd Phillips. Lady Gaga was rumored a few months ago to join the cast, potentially as Harley Quinn in what would apparently be a full-fledged musical.
Gaga herself confirmed at least part of this news, tweeting the film’s first-ever teaser. By showing the cartoon outline of Phoenix’s Joker with a cartoon of Gaga dancing together to Irving Berlin’s “Cheek to Cheek,” it also seems to validate the rest of the rumors. Who else would Joker dance with besides Harley? And if they’re dancing in the trailer, that would strongly suggest that there will be dancing (and maybe singing?) in the movie itself.
Watch the teaser below:
The film’s subtitle refers to a medical condition where “the same or similar mental disorder that affects two or more people, usually members of the same family”. If the Joker is involved, the only character he would canonically share a mental disorder with would be Harley Quinn. There have also been talks that Willem Dafoe could join the sequel as well, possibly as a Joker impersonator.
Joker: Madness for two is set to open in theaters on October 4, 2024. Can you imagine the theme song Lady Gaga will sing for a Joker film? I don’t think I’m mentally ready for that.
