Imo Ayenu’s suspected thief, specialized in theft of bank customers arrested

A 42-year-old man who is said to have specialized in finding and stealing bank customers who have made large withdrawals has been arrested by officers from the Edo State Police Command.
The suspect, John Ayenu, who was arrested during the week while carrying out his infamous activities in Uromi, Esan local government area in the northeast of the state, belongs to a gang of three men terrorizing Irrua, Uromi, Ubiaja and other communities in Edo Central.
It has been established that the suspect and two other people who are now on the run were still stationed at the bank premises, one of them stationed inside the banking hall, posing as a real customer carrying out a transaction. banking.
Nemesis however caught up with the suspect, when, they met their match in a policeman on duty at the mufti, who has just withdrawn a large sum of money.
On leaving the bank lobby, the victim deposited the money under the seat of his car and left without suspecting that he was being followed.
Ayenu and his other gang members followed their victim from the bank to Uromi-Irrua Road, where they intercepted and attacked him.
However, the victim resisted them, sounded the alarm, which drew the attention of residents and members of vigilantes in the neighborhood, who gave them a chase.
The suspect was arrested at the scene as his gang escaped on motorbikes.
Ayenu, who confessed to the crime, explained that they came from Imo State to conduct robbery operations in Edo.
âI am from Imo State. We came to Edo to watch the people who were withdrawing money from the bank. We are used to breaking into the car to get the money and running away.
âI couldn’t run far because I fell as they were chasing me as my other two members escaped with the bike we were using. I have a wife and two children in Imo, and I stay at the hotel every time I come to Edo State.
âI didn’t know this man was a policeman. He refused to give us the money, and he started fighting us and screaming for people to come, âhe said.
State Police Command spokesperson SP Bello Kontongs was not available to respond to the report.
