ERCOT asks power plants to postpone scheduled outages to meet extreme heat demand expected this weekend

SAN ANTONIO – Texas is about to get very hot with triple-digit weather forecasts this weekend for many parts of the state, including San Antonio.

Rising temperatures will undoubtedly lead to increased demand for energy as Texans try to beat the heat.

KSAT contacted the Electrical Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and was advised that the board “is forecasting extremely hot weather in the area Friday, May 6 through Monday, May 9, and may experience higher than normal power demand. “.

ERCOT is an independent, nonprofit organization that helps operate and manage the electrical grid that covers most of Texas.

The entity has infamously made headlines over the past year after a systemic power grid failure during unprecedented winter storms across Texas in February 2021.

The failure to prepare for and respond to the extreme weather event led to power outages and the dismissal of then council CEO Bill Magness.

With a shaky history that has left many Texans without power, ERCOT is adamant the power will stay on this weekend.

“ERCOT will deploy all the tools at our disposal to reliably manage the network. ERCOT is coordinating closely with the Public Utilities Commission, generating resource owners and transportation utilities to ensure they are prepared for extreme heat. ERCOT has asked power plants in the area to postpone planned outages and return outages already in progress in order to serve Texans this weekend,” an ERCOT spokesperson told KSAT via email.

“At present, ERCOT expects there will be enough generation to meet this high demand for electricity,” according to the spokesperson.

CPS Energy offers the following tips to help you save money on your energy bill during peak demand days:

  • Set the thermostats 2 to 3 degrees higher from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Set programmable thermostats to higher temperatures when no one is home to save energy.

  • If you are at home, use fans to feel 4-6 degrees cooler.

  • Set pool pumps to run early in the morning or at night – and turn them off from 3-7 p.m.

  • Turn off and unplug non-essential lights and appliances.

  • Avoid using large appliances such as ovens and washing machines, especially during peak hours or times specified in the conservation call.

  • Businesses should minimize the use of electric lighting and power-consuming equipment as much as possible.

  • Large electricity consumers should consider shutting down or reducing non-essential generation processes.
