DC Comics documentary series is coming to HBO Max
HBO Max has commissioned a three-part documentary series on the history and legacy of DC Comics. Oscar-nominated director and producer Leslie Iwerks will lead the project, with fellow executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden on board. Iwerks will share management tasks with Mark Catalena.
According to the official statement from WarnerMedia, the series “takes an unprecedented look at DC’s enduring and influential legacy, allowing fans to rediscover the character universe, as well as the origins of the iconic comic book company, its evolution and its nearly nine cultural decades. impact on all artistic mediums. This of course includes the wealth of Warner Bros. movies and TV shows. starring Superman, Batman, and the rest of the Justice League, not to mention standalone villain films such as Joker and Birds of prey.
DC has a rich heritage of over 80 years of iconic storytelling: from the introduction of the genre defining Super Hero Superman in 1938 to the incredible movies, TV shows, cartoons, games and comics that have been synonymous with superheroism for generations to come, ”said Jim Lee, DC Editor and Creative Director. “We are delighted to delve into this story and bring the fans on this incredible journey.”
HBO Max’s currently untitled docuseries are reminiscent of Marvel 616 and Marvel Studios: assembled, both produced exclusively for Disney +. DC fans will be able to engage with the DCEU in depth. “We hope to do these iconic heroes justice by joining forces with HBO Max as we delve deep into the super powerful and rich history of the DC Universe and create the definitive behind-the-scenes documentary,” said Mike Darnell, president of Warner Bros. Unscripted Television.
An estimated release date for the docuseries has yet to be set, but we can expect it to arrive sometime in 2022.
