iPhoney – See What Your Web Sites Look like On The iPhone

// November 22nd, 2007 // mobile web

Now that the iPhone has arrived on these shores, I bet there’s a few of you out there that don’t yet own it, but can’t wait to see what your web sites will look like on apples futuristic device. Well, heres a tasty little app that you can get your claws on. It’s called iPhoney.

It’s a free open source download and the requirements are Mac OS X 10.4.7 or later. (It’s not available for PC’s). It’s a free download and once it reaches your mac, just unzip the file and place it in your applications folder.

Heres a few other things that iPhoney can do:

  • Test your iPhone-enabled Web 2.0 applications and compatible web sites.
  • Open any website that works with Safari (use Safari 3 beta for the most accurate experience).
  • Rotate to see websites in either portrait or landscape orientation.
  • Show or hide the location bar for a full-screen iPhone experience.
  • Simulate the iPhone user agent, to test browser redirection scripts.
  • Zoom out to see how your current pages might look while zoomed out on iPhone.
  • Turn off plug-ins (including Flash, but note that they all turn off (including QuickTime).
  • Automatic updates with Sparkle, so you’ll always know if there’s a new version.
  • And of course, open source code so you can contribute to iPhoney’s rapid development.

    Thanks! I’m finding all about ‘iPhone friendly’ websites. The biggest problem I see so far is that sites that have a lot of links all over the page, in paragraphs for example, can be tricky to scroll on the iphone. One misplaced finger and you are taken to a new page by mistake. Some of the easiest sites to navigate are fixed width sites that have plenty of white space on the left or right margins.

    Great job! 5/5

    hiya.

    Downloading it now to have a play about. Generally i have found if the site is following good old web standards and works in webkit then it is likley to be fine on a real iPhone or ipod Touch.

    Anyway, i am intrested to see what happens next!

    Thanks for the great link!
